Description

North America saw the rise of the United States in the first half of the 19th century but little did the Americans know that their age of expansion was to end quite soon, even though they had just purchased a good chunk of Mexican territory after the Mexican-American War over the issue of Texas. The negotiations done by Nicholas Trist (for the American side) were very favorable to Mexico City and ultimately that became the problem. The slavocrats dominating the southern US states wanted to expand slavery but almost all northerners objected to this idea. So in late March, 1857 the state of South Carolina declared its independence from the "tyrannical" regime that refused to allow the new territories the right to establish slavery. Soon afterwards all of the other states of the Deep South followed and by the end of the year almost all slave states (with the exceptions of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware) had seceded from the union. President Frémont, a firm abolitionist, tried both diplomacy and force to keep the union holding but ultimately he failed after the Confederate States of America successfully shelled Washington, DC, from July 15th to July 20th 1859 shortly after receiving diplomatic recognition by the Second Empire of France.

With the Treaty of Harrisburg, signed on January 12th, 1860, the USA and the CSA officially recognized their split and the American continent never was the same. While North and Central America would remain rather static (besides the formation of the Federal Republic of Central America), South America also changed during this time and afterwards. The Empire of Brazil fell into decline after the Riograndese Republic became independent, while Chile and Paraguay emerged as major regional powers, averting an Argentinian hegemony.

In the old world the Second French Empire gained steam, both figuratively and literally, acquiring territories left and right while also being the most important continental cultural power. Its successful ventures in Indochina and the Congo, the humanitarian intervention in Ottoman Syria and their support for the young Kingdom of Italy manifested Napoleon III's legitimacy and led to the establishment of French power for years to come. Today France is a major power and its "entente", consisting out of the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of Italy, the CSA and the Russian Empire, is commonly seen as the most powerful alliance block of the world.

Opposite to France is the British system: the Imperial League. The UK, Austria(-Hungary-Galicia), the Ottoman Empire and the Empire of Japan are all notable powers (Great Britain probably even is the strongest single nation on the planet), yes, but the fact that they lack proximity makes them appear weaker than the Entente. They are trying to court the USA into joining the League before war breaks out over some stupid accident in Venetia (the most obvious powder keg thus far) and Confederate troops have an unopposed field day in the Bahamas and nobody (outside of the Entente at least) wants that.

So... do you have any questions? If you do, just write me a comment! And yes, this write-up was the reason this map showed up in your messages again. Also the titular cities of light would be: London, Vienna, Paris, Rome, Madrid and arguably Philadelphia (the "Second Capital" of the United States). Just as a heads up :p
